Halwyn a gan

Halwyn a gan, Cornish for Whitemoor sings, is probably one of the youngest choirs in Cornwall. Although it was only formed in 1997, it was based on eight years of hugely popular annual musicals performed at Whitemoor church during the proceeding eight years. Halwyn a gan is a mixed voice choir with approximately 30 members, ranging in age from thirteen to seventy and meets regularly for rehearsals. The choir continues to be led by its founding Musical Director, Barry Hawken, who has been involved with many local musical organisations including brass bands, choral societies and choirs. The choir considers that it is extremely fortunate to have the talented accompanists Michael Teague and Heather Vaughan. During Halwyn a gan's relatively short existence, its repertoire has grown significantly and is a fundamental part of the choir's success, both for the performers and audiences. The core of the choir's music continues to be drawn from the extensive library of sacred music available, with compositions by Handel and Haydn sitting comfortably along side modern composers such as Rutter and Kendrick. This is complemented by the use of appropriate secular music, including songs from "hit musicals" Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. The choir has performed three times at Truro Cathedral and has recorded a programme of favourite hymns for BBC Radio Cornwall. It has a full concert programme for 2003 and already has accepted invitations for 2004 and the choir is now preparing to record its first CD. If you are interested in joining this progressive and friendly group, please contact the Choir's Secretary Terry Beer on 01726 815088 The lack of any previous musical training need not be a barrier to singers seeking to join a group of people who love to sing and meet socially from time to time. The choir seeks to encourage all its members to improve their musical skills through rehearsals, together with the involvement or specialist tutors who help with particular aspects of singing. If you are between 8 and 18 years of age we will shortly be auditioning for a new singing programme. Called Ambosa Kernow, (Promise of Cornwall) the programme led by experienced and professional singing coaches, will offer a new and exciting introduction to a wide range of musical styles. The programme will result in a public performance and/or a CD. If you are interested contact me on the number above or e-mail me terrybeer@hotmail.com
